Accidental Death & Dismemberment Coverage

These days there is not a lot of mention of the accidental death and dismemberment option for life insurance. However, if your credit card has a feature that insures you each time you charge an air ticket, you are, in fact buying AD & D cover. That may not be the most economic way to provide such coverage and as you can imagine it is strictly limited to the plane ride itself. What about the trip in a car or van? When you go to the store and get involved in a three way pile up on the expressway, are you covered? Accidental death and dismemberment insurance is seldom quoted separately as agents don't promote the coverage because there is very little commission in it for them. For those of us who have a living to make, it's an important feature that needs to be considered.

As a supplemental coverage to your regular life insurance policy, AD & D is probably wise. Most of us are traveling far more than we used to and the chances of an accident occurring in one's lifetime is quite high. The coverage is usually quite inexpensive and can probably be added to a life policy for as little as $0.08 per month per thousand. The dismemberment feature pays various amounts for the loss of one or more limbs.

If you are pricing your life insurance coverage on line, check to ensure that the policy you are getting quoted contains the AD &D clause. If not then add that as a separate feature.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance is one of the least discussed but it is a necessary aspect of your insurance plan and you should include it for the primary income producers in the family. You may also want to consider including AD & D Cover for other members who travel since a severe accident can occur anywhere at any time and leave a family with unexpected financial burdens on top of an already wrenching loss.
